How can the parents help the teachers?

What can we do to lighten the load? Remote learning is new to everyone involved. There are new tools to learn. There are old habits we need to unlearn. As parents, what can we do or say to help?

Two things: communication and patience.

Communication. Please do NOT hesitate to ask questions from the teacher. If you or your kid does not understand a topic, don't hesitate to communicate with their teachers. This will help prevent setbacks and delays. You don't have to be in the dark just because we're in a crisis. If you really want your kid to pursue learning, you must work in tandem with the teachers... so, don't be scared to communicate!
Patience. Do know that you will have setbacks along the way —and a lot of them! You can help lighten the load of teachers by being extra, extra patient with your kid. They might ask help in navigating Zoom, Skype, or Google Classroom.. So, if you can, squeeze more patience out of you.

It would be so good if all parents are like you. Teachers really do need the cooperation of parents during these terrible times. Some parents would just let their kids watch movies and play video games, instead of encouraging them to do home assignments.

Parents do play a huge part:

  1. Monitor child's screen time, video game, television, and internet use.
  2. Encourage your child to read (even after online sessions). If your kid is a toddler, I would recommend repetition and rhyme.
  3. Encourage active learning. Listen to your child's thoughts and ideas. Has your child been talking about building rockets and flying to space? Lego bricks and Styrofoam planets might interest your kid.
  4. Ask the teacher if there is anything they need help with (like sending you worksheets you can print at home, etc.)
