Before I began creating educational resources for children, I was teaching organic chemistry to university students. Many of these students had a hard time visualizing what happens to organic molecules when they are involved in chemical reactions. I tried my best to help them by giving more practice problems. Well, that didn’t really help. They just felt more frustrated, defeated, and helpless. Many of them failed the course and changed majors. I really wish I knew what I know now.
Spatial ability is one of the important keys to success in STEAM disciplines. Inorganic chemistry, spatial abilities are needed in solving problems that require manipulation of 2D and 3D representations of molecules. If I could turn back time, I should have created a spatial training intervention program for my struggling learners.
